Taking Pictures of Snakes - A Photo Shoot in Mumbai

The cobra swayed ever so slightly as he twisted his head from side to side eyeing us cautiously. Camera glued to my eye, I edged a bit closer, snapping off frames, playing with the composition. The snake struck the side of my face before I even knew what was happening. I fell backward, away from the blow, my heart pounding. Even though I knew that the de-fanged snake was harmless, adrenaline was coursing through my veins!

I was in Mumbai, India doing a stock photo shoot to photograph a cobra in a boardroom. Wherever I go, I try and come up with unique new concept stock images, and I try to think of what additional images I might need to create more such images when I return to my studio in Sausalito, California. Of course, as usual, things were a little more complicated than I expected them to be.

Finding a cobra to photograph, for example, wasn't such an easy thing to accomplish. As it turns out, they don't allow snake charmers to entertain the tourists in Mumbai anymore. My Indian producer did finally manage to find a real snake charmer at the last minute. As we were already shooting in a call center, we had the snake charmer set up in one of the meeting rooms.

My plan was to shoot the snake in such a way that I could later shoot a businessman and have him "charming" the cobra out of his briefcase. OK, corny idea, I admit it. And I never did do that image. But the cobra images did come in handy. I utilized the Cobra photograph in a stock image I created of the Hindu god Ganesha, the remover of all obstacles. Ganesha, as it turns out, wears a snake as part of his pantheon of symbols. And you never know where that Cobra may show up next!

During our photo shoot it was obvious to me that the snake charmer, a poor Indian man, but possessed of grace and dignity, was very fond of his Cobra. Every time I have had to photograph a snake, I have done so under the closer supervision of its owner. I shoot pictures of a lot of animals and we always use either the owner or a professional trainer to guide us in how to shoot the animal without stressing or endangering it...or us!

When shooting snakes it is important to remember that they are far more fragile than one might guess. They have thin, delicate bones, are very sensitive to temperature, and are easily stressed. If the snakes in question are poisonous then I would never get within striking range, and certainly wouldn't even attempt to photograph one without a professional handler. No snake picture is worth dying for!

As a stock photographer I strive to create unique new stock images that the marketplace wants and needs. I hate to admit it, but my snake images have not been among my best sellers. Perhaps it is because such a large percentage of the market is squeamish or even frightened of snakes...or perhaps my snake images just haven't been good enough.

The Magic of Balloon Animals

Children of all ages have always loved balloon animals. They are always a hit at parties of any type. Despite their popularity, few people actually know the history behind this popular entertainment concept. Who came up with the idea of bending and twisting a balloon into the shape of an animal? Who invented the balloon for that matter?

Would it surprise you to learn that balloons have been around since the time of the Aztecs? They were the very first people in recorded history to make balloons, as well as balloon animals. They would clean the intestine of a deceased cat and sew it closed; they would then twist it and blow air into each twisted section, forming it into the desired shape. As you can see, it was a very complicated procedure. In addition, it was a rather gruesome sounding beginning for something that is now considered fun and cute. We do not have to endure that much toil and trouble for our balloon animals these days.

Throughout history around the world, there have been many experiments involving different types of balloons. The earliest examples are told of in China, Italy, France, and in America. Everywhere in the world, balloons have served science and even aided in industry. The first rubber balloons were invented in 1824, and today, forms of latex balloons are used in every aspect of life from mapping the weather to medical procedures and, of course, entertainment.

The art of twisting rubber balloons was first recorded in 1900. Balloon modeling, or balloon twisting, is the shaping of special modeling balloons into almost any given shape. These balloons are long and skinny, as it is virtually impossible to use the traditional round ones for sculpting. With just one balloon, the creation is most often a balloon animal. The more balloons, the more creative and extravagant the sculpture. These different types of design styles are known as single balloon modeling, which restricts itself to the use of one balloon per model, and multiple balloon modeling. That is when you attach more balloons, by twisting them on, or even with some sort of adhesive. People who create balloon animals and other twisted balloon sculptures are called Twisters. This is often times their chosen career, and they strive very hard to perfect their talent.

You do not have to be a professional Twister to master the skill of balloon art. All you need is the Balloon Magic Kit. It has everything you will need to learn how, and to make over 20 different balloon animals. The package includes a very easy to understand book, with beautiful pictures, 48 figure tying balloons, and even a hand held inflator to make the filling and tying easier for you. When you have learned the basics, you will have the opportunity to improve your ability. There are other books and videos and kits that will help you learn more complicated and exciting balloon magic tricks available from this site.

Animal Photography Basics - How to Get Great Photos in Your Backyard

Often when we think of wildlife we think of animals far away from home, but many people take amazing wildlife photos in their own backyards.

Photographing Furry and Feathery Wildlife

Depending on where you live, there are many ways to turn your yard into a wildlife haven for squirrels, raccoons, birds, deer, frogs and other critters.

While it's true that we rarely do wildlife a service by feeding them from our cupboards, if you follow the wildlife attraction and sustainability tips from the National Wildlife Federation (they're online) you can feel good knowing that you are giving back to wildlife.

You will also be creating an environmentally friendly landscape as well because what is good for the animals is also good for the environment.

Take a bit of time to read about the habits of the species you want to photograph and you'll find it much easier to capture them with your camera. And you will be better able to avoid attracting potentially dangerous predators into your yard. You might also want to check out the code of ethic posted for professional nature photographers by the North American Nature Photography Association.

Just as with photographing pets, when you take a picture of a furry or feathery wild critter, follow these guidelines:

  • Use natural lighting to your advantage
  • Fill the frame with the subject
  • Focus on the eyes
  • Shoot from various angles
  • Capture personality

Photographing Insects

Wildlife photography also includes the miniature world of animals. Butterflies, dragonflies, snails, ladybugs, honeybees, bumblebees, spiders...these are all popular subjects.

Photographing insects can be tricky. Here are some tips from the pros to help:

  • Like with larger wildlife, it will help to know your subject's patterns of behavior. Do the butterflies frequent one flowery shrub more than others? Then stake it out and wait for the subject to come to you. And be ready!
  • To get the best shots of small creatures at rest, use macro mode and fill the frame. Your camera's manual will tell you how close your macro mode works. If you stay within the proper range and hold your camera steady, you will get some nice, crisp shots.
  • Unless the insect is very still, use sports mode or flash to freeze action.
  • Most insects are very sensitive to carbon dioxide and will run or fly away if you breathe directly on them. So when you lean in close for your close up, hold your breath! There are a few exceptions - some beetles will freeze (they won't say "cheese" though.)
  • Keep in mind some insects and spiders pack powerful, even deadly venom, so know your bug before approaching.
  • Because insects slow down with cooler temperatures, early morning and twilight are easier times for capturing them with your camera. Insects can see shadows very well; so don't approach from the same direction as the light casts.

Landscape Photography - Capture the Beautiful Moments

Landscape photography is an art that captures beautiful moments from nature. For a nature lover, landscape photography is an extremely rewarding exercise that allows the photographer to spend time with nature and freeze the beautiful moments on film. There are photographers who enjoy it as a hobby and there are others who take it up as a profession. However, a love for nature and an understanding is an important pre-requisite for a landscape photographer. For a professional landscape photographer travelling across to beautiful locations to capture the beauty of nature is a part of the interest and job.

With nature being dynamic you would always get to see a new facet each time. For the trained eye, every rendezvous with nature is the beginning of a new love affair. A sunset for instance may seem like just another routine happening in nature for a layman, however, for a landscape photographer it is a marvel of nature, a sight that interests and inspires and conveys a thousand meanings. The landscape photographer provides others with a number of beautiful moments as seem by him through his lens. The response of the viewer is one that provides immense thrill and satisfaction to the landscape photographer.

Photography can be done by just about anyone who has a camera, however, the difference between a good photographer and a layman lies in the eye for detail and the passion involved. While a good landscape photographer knows the technicalities of clicking a good photographer and has passion for his subject a laymen simply sees only the physical attributes. For taking it up at a professional level, a course may be of help. A course would help teach you the technical aspects of photography, provide knowledge about different types of photographic equipment and also how to make the best use of the natural elements. A good photograph is the result of a number of factors.

With technology having brought about a revolutionary change in photographic equipment, it is now possible to get high-end equipment that provides excellent results. A good camera with telephoto lens is the basic requirement. The telephoto lens allows for a zoom in and thus, even if the subject is far away you could click a snap as though you were standing just near it. Having a tripod too would help as you would be able to have a steady hand and also when the wait for clicking the photo is long a tripod would help you rest till the moment arrives when you need to get into action.

A truly satisfying profession, landscape photography allows you to capture through your lens some of the most beautiful moments in nature.

Scrapbooking Sticker Art Can Embellish Your Scrapbook

Scrapbooking sticker art is a cost effective way to jazz up your scrapbooking pages. With many embellishments costing several dollars each, you may find that it makes more sense to express your creativity with stickers. Not just any stickers will do, though. Just like the papers you use in your scrapbooks need to be acid free, so do the stickers you use in your memory albums. However, you can easily find these online and in stores where scrapbook supplies are sold.

Many individuals like to make their own scrapbooking sticker art, which can be accomplished by purchasing an inexpensive sticker machine. A word of caution, though. While many of the sticker machines on the market are quite inexpensive, the cartridges the machines use to produce the stickers aren't. Still, it is a great way to dress up your scrapbook pages with stickers made out of photos, tags, and other items.

Many scrappers who use the sticker machines plan carefully how they will use them in order to save money on cartridges. You can really do a lot with these machines, other than using them to embellish your scrapbook pages. You can print your own labels, CD and DVD covers, and even make your own greeting cards. They can really come in handy when personalizing gifts and creating fabulous invitations and notes.

One of the advantages of using the scrapbooking sticker machines is that many of them accept cartridges that will turn out both permanent stickers and those that you can reposition. You choose which cartridge you want to buy depending on the kind of project you are working on. Just knowing that you can reuse your sticker art adds a distinct dimension to making your own.

You can get a lot of ideas for sticker art online. Scrappers like to exchange ideas with each other and there are many websites devoted to the hobby of scrapbooking. For example, one woman likes to find unique shapes and designs on scraps of wrapping paper and create stickers from the designs. You may find a lot of uses for such a machine once you start to research.

While you are conducting your research, you may find it helpful to read online reviews about the various scrapbooking sticker machines. This can be extremely important as many of the customers who leave reviews will talk about the kind of paper that works the best in these machines and how easy or difficult it is to use them. You may also want to watch an online video or two so that you can see one of these machines in action. You can have a lot of fun making your own stickers for your scrapbooking projects and other crafts.
