Painting Fiberglass

Fibreglasses are made out of strong and light materials. They are hardened into plastic-like materials. Though they look like plastics, they are not considered one. Painting on fiberglass needs more attention than just the ordinary wood and glass painting. Unlike the glass, we can sand the fiberglass until it is smooth enough. Just like the wood and metals, we also need to apply primer to the fiberglass before applying the final coating. Fiberglass allows us to create the finest and smoothest surfaces without damaging the glass-like or plastic-like material.

Sanding is one of the most important parts in painting fiberglass. It will make them shinier, and smoother as in grits of the sandpaper increases. We need to continue sanding the fiberglass until we get satisfied with the smoothness of the surface. We do not need to hurry for this because the more time we sand, the smoother it will get.

After the sanding procedures, we will now go to the cleaning. We can wash it with mild solution soap. We can also use the mineral sprits that are not turpentine. Washing them thoroughly will remove all the residues from the sanding. We rinse it with very clear water so that we can easily see if there is still remaining sanded fiberglass on it.

After the sanding and the cleaning, we will now do the applying of paint coats. We need to choose a paint that will match with our primer base. Acrylic will be the best choice for top coats.

After applying the coat of the primer, we let it dry and then again sand it using a 120+ grit sand paper. This will make it smoother after applying the paint. We just need to make sure that we don't go deeper so that the paint will not be wiped out.

After the sanding of the primer paint, we now go to the applying of the second layer of paint with at least two thin coats. We can use the roller spray or the spray gun for the most coats to make the painting a lot easier and faster. It will also give us a finer and even coat.

For a better sanding result, we can use the orbital sander to give us a faster job and a smoother finish. Another important thing to remember is to not assemble the fiberglass parts before curing the paint. Any form of brushing and rubbing of the components can cause the peeling and cracking of the paint.

Those are all the procedures and guidelines on how to apply paint on fiberglass. We can perform this procedure for all the fibreglasses that needs painting. Just remember to always wear protection whenever being exposed to fibreglasses. The use of gloves and protective gears will prevent us from further accidents.

Now we can enjoy our newly painted fibreglasses into our homes.
